Synopsis

In 1945, the soldiers of the Polish Army return in large numbers to Poland from the West. One of them is a lieutenant Stanisław Szymanko, who served as a RAF pilot, and now comes back home together with his English wife – Margaret. On the day of Stalin's death, Szymanko is arrested. Left on her own, Margaret tries to save her husband. She asks Colonel Bergman for his help and he promises to stand up for her husband. However, fascinated by Margaret, Bergman begins to play a double game. He makes promises one after another, at the same time trying to seduce the desperate woman. Meanwhile, Szymanko's trial ends and the court pronounces the sentence.
The film makes an attempt to settle accounts with the communist past of the first half of the 1950s. It is often compared to "Przesłuchanie" ("Interrogation") by Ryszard Bugajski, which featured Krystyna Janda in a similar dramatic part.
